Who We Are

In 2003, Ted Wycall graduated from the University of Montana with a degree in environmental studies. His first job upon leaving the university was on an organic farm (Quinn Farm and Ranch) in north central Montana.

During the autumn of 2003 Ted returned to the Delmarva Peninsula. The first two years he worked for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, United States Fish and Wildlife Service, and Echo Hill Outdoor School. In the summer of 2004, he moved into a yurt on his family’s land just outside Salisbury Maryland. The idea was to homestead on the land; hunt, forage and grow as much of his food as possible, while working off-farm. Though Ted wanted to be a farmer, he didn’t believe a he had enough land to do so. Then in autumn of2005, began working for Jay Martin at Provident Organic Farm. It was there that he learned many important lessons.

In 2006 Greenbranch Farm was born. Land that the Wycall family had leased to conventional corn/soybean growers for many decades was now undergoing transition to organic, small scale vegetable farming. 2006 was a year of intensive cover-cropping at Greenbranch. Though some small plots of vegetables were grown, Ted’s apprenticeship with Jay Martin and the Provident Farm CSA kept him extremely busy.

Beginning in 2007 Ted was working full time at Greenbranch. In between farm chores he was busy planning and sawmilling lumber for what would soon become his new home and base of operations, the Barn. With a great crew of students from Salisbury University, his family behind him 100%, the wisdom and guidance from his mentor Jay Martin, and a little luck, Greenbranch Farm successfully completed its first year.

The season of 2008 will go down in Greenbranch History as one of the most memorable. Once again, a stellar crew, admittance to several well-run farmers markets, a blossoming farmstand, and a partnership with Jay and the Provident Farm CSA made the season a success. For the first time in decades, animals were returned to the land when Ted purchased 24 laying hens and 4 beef steers.

Now that we are entering the 2009 season, the excitement here at Greenbranch can hardly be contained. Ted and his fiancée Julia Bozick are gearing up for a big year. With plans to plant 20 acres of vegetables, a half acre berry patch, 2 acres of fruit trees, raise 250 laying hens, 10 head of cattle, and 6 pigs, we could hardly be busier. To top things off the barn is still under construction, there is over a mile of fencing to be built, and a wedding to plan.
